Ajrakh is a block-printed textile that is resist-dyed using natural dyes. including indigo and madder. It is made by Khatris community in Kutch, Gujarat and is distinguished by its color- blue with red - and its complex geometric & floral patterns. It's name is derived from 'azarak', 'blue' in Arabic & Persian.
Traditionally, block printing was used to print fabrics. This process involves sketching and carving a design into a block of wood, applying ink or dye, and stamping it onto a finished cloth. Block printing differs from weaving, where patterns are woven into a fabric as it's created.
Ajrak (Sindhi: ?????), also known as Ajrakh is a unique form of block printing found in Sindh, Pakistan. These shawls display special designs and patterns made using block printing by stamps. Over the years, ajraks have become a symbol of the Sindhi culture and traditions.
