Details In the 19th century, Kolkata (then Calcutta) was the thriving capital of British India. As the city continued to flourish, it gave rise to a new class of locals- the Babus and the Bibis. The Bengali Babus were educated in English, enjoyed a western lifestyle, patronised arts and culture and indulged in personal grooming and fashion. They also made some questionable decisions in their personal and professional lives, but that is a different matter! The wives of the Babus, popularly called the Bibis, took a keen interest in fashion to the extent of incorporating French and English elements in their wardrobe. Although they were not the empowered women we ideally want to see, they received some opportunity to study and explore the outside world, making them more progressive than their female ancestors. They were frightened by its appearance. The creature was in fact a demon named Bakasur who had arrived there in the guise of a storke after being instructed by Kansa, Kirshna s Uncle who hated Krishna for his super natural power/ divinity. This was to kill Lord Krishna. As soon as the cowherds drew near him, the storke hastily picked up Lord Krishna with his beak. Details The satirical depiction of the cat with prawns in its mouth in Kalighat Pattachitra serves as a sharp commentary on the evolving tastes of the so-called Elite Bengalis. Traditionally, both Bengalis And Cats have been synonymous with their love for fish. However, the preference for Prawns Over Fishwhich is often associated with European Influence And Elitismbecomes a subtle critique in these paintings. The Kalighat Artists, known for their wit and observational humor, used the cat as a metaphor for the Bengali bhadralok (gentlefolk), showcasing how they embraced Westernized Preferences While Maintaining A Faade Of Tradition. Through this sarcastic visual, the artists mock the irony of the Bengali elite, who, despite their deep-rooted love for fish, gradually shifted towards a more Colonial-Influenced Palate. Details Brief background about the goddess: Jagatdhatri or Jagaddhatri (transl.Bearer of the World) is an aspect of the Hindu Goddess, Parvati, worshipped in the Indian State of West Bengal and other states like Odisha and Jharkhand. Her worship and rituals are derived from Tantra. It is believed that her worship frees her devotees from ego and all other materialistic desires. At Krishnanagar( a town in West Bengal India), Raj Rajeshwary Jagatdhatri Puja is one of the oldest in Bengal. As per local history, Maharaja Krishnachandra was arrested by Nawab Siraj-ud-Dullah once for not paying taxes on time. He was released from prison during the day of Vijaya Dasami. Having missed the entire festivity of Durga Puja in his kingdom, Maharaja became extremely sad. Seeing her devotee sad, the ultimate mother, Goddess Jagaddhatri gave Maharaja a vision and the king commenced the ritual of Jagatdhatri Puja in his native place. The puja was performed by Raj Rajeshwary (Raj Mata in Bengali language) and before the start, a Jagatdhatri Puja was donated by Maharaja Krishna Chandra named Maa Jaleshwary at Malopara Barowary. The worship of the goddess was later resumed by Sarada Devi, wife of Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Jagatdhatri Puja is very popular in Krishnanagar, (Sutragarh-Santipur), Tehatta, Rishra, Chandannagar, Bhadreswar, Hooghly, Boinchi, Ashoknagar-Kalyangarh, Howrah.
