Electrical contacts play a crucial role in electrical circuits, as they make and break the flow of currents in circuits. An ideal electrical contact offers infinite resistance when open and zero resistance when closed. In actuality, the contact does have a finite resistance when closed; this resistance has a heating effect due to so-called'I-squared-R' losses. If not maintained properly, the contacts will offer high resistance and may evenburn up due to overheating.
Referring to the diagram, it can be seen that a 440V ac circuit has more than 1200 volts peak-to-peak appearing across the contact, which becomes a spark gap as the contact closes or opens. As a result, the foreign material present m me surrounding air gets deposited on me contact surface, thus creating an insulating layer, and increasing the contact resistance.
What are Electrical Contact Cleaners ?
Electrical cleaners are used to remove contaminants that could provide a path for tracking or arcing, and to remove grime that would cause overheating. These cleaners can also be used to advantage to clean stripped wires before joining terminals and so forth.
Constituents of High Quality Contact Cleaner Aerosols
Aerosols are a convenient means of providing cleaning action, on even hard to reach contacts. The 'Ingredients include an- appropriate chemical compound and a propellant. Many different kinds of compounds and propellants can be used. What is -Important, however, is that the compounds must not be oil-based, because such compounds will aggravate the dirt on the contact surface.
Can Contract Cleaner Be Applied On Live Contacts ?
It is important to understand the functioning of the aerosol cleaners; these do not by themselves do anything more than loosen the dirt and grime; it is the wiping action of the contact which ultimately removes such contaminants; just as one needs to scrub and not just apply soap for washing one's hands. So, simply spraying a cleaner on a live contact is not an advisable method of suing contact cleaner, not to mention the fact that this is a hazardous practice not approved under electrical codes or the Factory Act. and may invalidate any future insurance claims. The following table illustrate the advantages of our contact cleaner over some competitive brands
