The heat is transferred by induction heating of a conductive material (typically steel scrap) in a crucible set in a water-cooled opposing current solenoid coil in an induction furnace. The induction coil must be isolated from the liquid steel by a substance known as refractory. A non-conductive refractory crucible is encircled by a coil of copper tubing in a coreless induction furnace
