phenol-formaldehyde resin, also called phenolic resin, any of a number of synthetic resins made by reacting phenol (an aromatic alcohol derived from benzene) with formaldehyde (a reactive gas derived from methane). Phenol-formaldehyde resins were the first completely synthetic polymers to be commercialized. In the first decades of the 20th century, bakelite, a trademarked phenolic plastic, revolutionized the market for molded and laminated parts for use in electrical equipment. Phenolics are still very important industrial polymers, though their most common use today is in adhesives for the bonding of plywood and other structural wood products. The chemical composition of phenol and formaldehyde and their combination into networks of permanently interlinked large molecules are explained briefly in the article aldehyde condensation polymer.

it is a kind of thermal plasticizing hydrocarbon resin produced by c5, c9 fraction, by-products of petroleum cracking, through pretreatment, polymerization and distillation. It is not a high polymer but a low polymer with the molecular weight between 300-3000. Featured by acid value, easy mutual solubilities, resistant to water, resistant to ethanol and chemicals. It has the chemical stabilizing property to acid and alkaline, viscosity adjusting and thermal stabilizing, generally, the petroleum resins are not used independently, but have to be used together with other kinds of resins as promoters, adjusting agents and modifiers in hot-melt adhesive, pressure-sensitive adhesive, hot melt road marking paint, [2]rubber tires and so on.

c.i. Resin is used as the excellent tackifier and processing aid in the compounding of range of rubbers viz. Nbr, cr, epdm, csm, cpe, nr, acrylic rubbers, millable pu. During the mixing cycle of the rubber compound, c.i. Resin is added at the early stage of the mixing when mixed in the 2-roll mill and in kneader or banburry, it can be used along with the addition of fillers. It is also used as tackifier in the rubber based contact adhesives.
