Typical commercial cleansing soap is made by reacting sodium hydroxide with a fatty acid. The specific gravity of soaps is slightly more than 1.0; inclusion of air gives a floating product. Water solutions of sodium soaps in bar, chip, or powder form are universally used as mild emulsifying detergents for washing textiles, skin, paint, etc.
