Capturing surveillance data, whether voice, video, or electronic, is critical to ensuring homeland security. As critical is the ability to stream, receive, and transmit this data securely; and this is where encryptiondecryption (henceforth referred to as encryption) devices play an important role. The encryption processing takes place in a hardware chip: either an ASIC or an FPGA. The chip implements encryption and decryption using one of the encryption standards AES, TDES, etc. Such chips are used for data-at-rest applications: in USB drives, HDDs, and other data storage devices that encrypt data as it is written to the medium. These chips are also used when designing custom-built devices voicevideo transmission and reception equipment, data storage sub-systems, networking devices, and computing devices.
