Capillary tubing assemblies range from simple cut pieces of standard capillary to complex, multi-capillary assemblies. Customer specifications and application requirements are thoroughly reviewed by the technical team to determine the most cost-effective assembly design. With over 50 standard products, Molex offers the widest range of Polymicro Technologies capillary sizes in the market. Alternately, custom sizes can be economically produced, with many small diameter capillary having internal diameter tolerances as low as 1 m. Selection of the appropriate cutting or cleaving techniques for producing the desired capillary end finish is critical for all assembly types. Cutting and cleaving techniques include standard cleaves, precision cleaves, saw cutting, and laser cutting. Once the capillary size and end-face requirements are defined, cut capillary pieces can be produced, ranging in length from a few millimeters to over 100m depending upon the application. For flow restrictor applications, the flow rate is specified, in which case the part length is based on the measured internal diameter. In many instances a small segment of the protective polymeric coating is removed, a technique referred to as windowing. Molex has perfected this laser-based manufacturing capability and it can be performed on a wide variety of single and multi-capillary assemblies, including those with internal coatings. In addition, the fused silica can be laser machined to form unique end-face designs such as caps and emitters. Molex has extensive expertise in complex, multi-capillary assemblies up to 384 capillary. Mechanical assembly components can be customer supplied or jointly developed from prototype to volume production.
