Paperboard is a thick paper-based material; paperboard is generally thicker (usually over 0.25 mm, 0.010 in, or 10 points) than paper. According to ISO standards, paperboard is a paper with a grammage above 224 g/m2, but there are exceptions. Paperboard can be single or multiply. Paperboard can be easily cut and formed, is lightweight, and because it is strong.
USESUsed in packaging and graphic printing, such as book and magazine covers or postcards. Sometimes it is referred to as cardboard, which is a generic, lay term used to refer to any heavy paper pulpbased board. Paperboard is also used in fine arts for creating sculptures.
This is used for containers and can contain liquids as it may have a water-proof liner on the inside. It can have a wax feel. This type of card is used by the food industry and consequently recycled card is not used in its manufacture.
The below illustration demonstrates four basic types of combined board that are most commonly created from linerboard and medium using the variety of flute structures:
Single Face:One corrugated medium is glued to one flat sheet of linerboard.
Single Wall:The corrugated medium is glued between two sheets of linerboard. Also known as Double Face.
Double Wall:Three sheets of linerboard with two mediums in between.
Triple Wall:Four sheets of linerboard with three mediums in between.Generally, larger flute profiles deliver greater cushioning and vertical compression strength, while smaller flute profiles provide enhanced graphics capabilities. Smaller flutes such as E and F also provide enhanced structural capabilities for primary (retail) packaging compared to paperboard (folding cartons). There is a good deal of variance across the industry in the range of flute sizes based upon the container characteristics that are desired for each application, as well.
