The plant of Holy Basil commonly known as Tulsi, belong to Lamiaceae family. It is an erect, much branched, fragrant and erected plant attaining a height of about 20-50 cm. Different parts of the plant are used in Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine for prevention and cure of many illnesses like cough, influenza, common cold, headache, fever, colic pain, bronchitis, asthma, hepatic diseases, fatigue, skin diseases, arthritis, digestive disorders. The present paper is an attempt to provide a detailed botanical description, taxonomy, traditionally used and various pharmacological activity study of the plant.

Introduction:-

The Basil plant is an annual herb that grows up to one meter in height. The flower color rang from white to pink depending on the species of plant. The leaves are religiously important In India and are considered a holy plant. The basil oil is highly use in aromatherapy as it awakens the mind to clarity of thought and acts as a mental stimulant.

Fresh leaves of Holy Basil of 5 varieties were collected around Gujarat and South Region (India). The plant materials were identified and authenticated before extractions begin. A large number of plant species contain volatile chemical compounds which can be extracted as an essential oil. According to the geographical origin of basil varieties and on the basis of their major constituents, basil leaves were used with high amount of eugenol.

Composition:-

Each 30ml contains equal proportion of highly concentrated and natural extract of 5 types of

Basil Leaves namely

Shyam Tulsi (Occimum basilicum) - 6 ml

Rama Tulsi (Occimum sanctum) 6 ml

Shwet Sursa Tulsi (Occimum canum) - 6 ml

Nimbu Tulsi (Occimum citridorum) 6 ml

Van Tulsi (Occimum gratissimum) 6 ml

The Oil is extracted by using Hydro (Steam) Distillation. The content of Compounds was correlated with plant height rather than plant age. Particularly, Methyl eugenol and Estragole was predominant in plants up to 10 cm in height, whereas eugenol was prevalent in taller plants. Different methods are used to separate these oils from the various plant materials. Although it seems relatively simple to isolate such oils, the composition of oil may vary to a large extent depending on the extraction method used.

Steam Distillation is used for distilling volatile components from various raw materials, like spices, seeds, leaves, roots etc. These oils are generally recovered by directly applying steam to raw materials followed by condensation of the distillate. The temperature of the steam needs to be carefully controlled just enough to force the plant material to let go of the essential oil, yet not too hot as to burn the plant material or the essential oil. Different components of these essential oils contribute to the characteristic fragrance and aroma.
