Chickpeas are a type of pulse, with one seedpod containing two or three peas. Chickpeas store really well, and are high in nutritive value. Domesticated chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans) come in two main groups called desi and kabuli. Kabuli varieties are generally large and light coloured with smooth coat. The desi, on the other hand, have smaller, darker seeds and a rougher coat than the kabuli variety.
Chickpeas are sold in markets either dry or canned, and its flour is used to make dishes in many cultures. Because of their high protein content, chickpeas are also increasingly used as animal feed.
