Description:-
This is one of the most famous, ancient( more than 1000 years old) and beautiful form of Art.
The word Batik or 'Batique' is Indonesian in origin. It is derived from the word “Ambatik” which means clothes with many dots. The word batik refers to the wax-resist dyeing technique used in textiles.Batik painting is usually done on cotton and silk fabrics, which is more popular in this modern world.

In this technique of painting specific areas of the cloth are covered with a dye resistant substance like wax to stop them form absorbing the dyes and thereby they give shape to exquisite patterns.
Batik painted clothes are also very durable. Batik painting portrays a huge array of themes which include religious themes as well as abstract patterns.

Process :

The process of batik painting involves three steps which are : waxing, dyeing and de-waxing.
-The 1st step includes giving the cotton cloth a thorough washing to remove the starch. The cloth is then dried, ironed and stretched on a wooden frame.
-The 2nd step includes making a rough pencil/crayon sketch which serves as a guide for the painting. The design develops gradually with each coat of waxing.
-The 3rd process is a pretty complicated one. It includes the application of the wax(melted mixture of paraffin, resin and yellow beeswax )that is a protective agent in the dyeing process. the wax needs to be filled up in the portion of design where I dont want colour to be applied. This needs to be taken care of as the process is reversed. Thus for each and every different color to be used on the fabric the painter has to use the protective wax ink.

Once this is done, the cloth is dyed in the required colour.
This process of waxing, dyeing and dewaxing can be repeated multiple times till the entire batik design or fabric has been completed. For more fineness, this process should begin with light colors and end with dark colors.
