Laying and compacting properly graded material on a sub-grade that has been produced in line with the criteria constitutes a granular sub-base (GSB). The GSB layer sits between the sub-grade and wet mix macadam layers. Due to its qualities, the GSB layer is used in highway and road construction.

The granular subbase, which makes up the bottom (lowest) layer of the pavement structure, serves as the main support for the following road profile. It also offers drainage for the pavement structure and shields it from frost.
