Linseed oil, also known as Flaxseed oil, is is a yellow coloured compound extracted by pressing dried flax plant seeds. It is an edible oil widely used as a nutritional supplement which is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that appears to be beneficial for heart disease
Linseed oil is also used as a major painting compound that binds paint material, contains it and makes it extra glossy and shiny. Its natural characteristic of drying upon application comes in handy for efficient wood finish. . It is used in various industries as Paint industry, Ink and Printing industry, Coating industry, Adhesive industry.
The production methods of linseed oil are generally oil pressing (hot pressing & cold pressing) and oil extraction (Refining).
Linseed meal is the by-product of oil production from linseeds. Linseeds and linseed meal have attracted considerable attention since the 1990s due to the presence in the oil of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), notably alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).
Linseed meal consists of dark grey pieces (flakes) of variable size with a smooth, slightly curved cut surface. Unlike other major meals (soybean, sunflower and rapeseed), the major source of linseed meal available for livestock feeding is the oil-rich expeller type rather than solvent-extracted meal, which is less commonly used.
