Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate is a water soluble, clear and crystalline compound that is prepared by heating zinc sulphide ore in air and dissolving out and recrystallizing the sulphate. Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate is commonly used as the heptahydrate form; it occurs naturally as the mineral goslarite, and can be prepared by reacting zinc with sulfuric acid. The Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate is known commonly as white vitriol. It loses water at 30^oC to give the hexahydrate and more water is lost at 70^oC to form the monohydrate. The anhydrous salt forms at 280^oC and this decomposes above 500^oC.  Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate is used in agriculture as a weed killer and to give protection against pests. It is also used to add zinc in fertilizers.
