A T-slot nut is used with a threaded clamping stud to position and secure pieces being worked on in a workshop. The T-slot nut slides along a T-slot track, which is set in workbench or table for a router, drill press, or bandsaw. T-slot nuts are also used with T-slot structural framing to build a variety of industrial structures and machines.

A flange nut is a nut that has a wide flange at one end that acts as an integrated washer. This serves to distribute the pressure of the nut over the part being secured, reducing the chance of damage to the part and making it less likely to loosen as a result of an uneven fastening surface. The necessity of using a washer is eliminated as the bearing surface of the face of the nut is larger thereby effecting a stronger grip.These nuts are mostly hexagonal in shape and are made up of hardened steel.

A castellated nut, sometimes referred to as a castle nut, is a nut with slots cut into one end. Castellated and slotted nuts are designed to use a pin (usually a cotter pin) that fits through the slots and through a hole in the screw to which the nut is attached. This pin prevents the nut from turning and loosening. Compared with slotted nuts, castellated nuts allow the cotter pin to be confined closer to the margins of the nut itself, providing added secureness.
