It uses detection of carbon particles present in smoke by using Infrared diodes. When smoke enters the chamber diode receives more light and the detector gives out alarm signal and also turn ON red led for local indication

The Discovery Marine Optical Smoke Detector has a white moulded polycarbonate case with wind-resistant smoke inlets. The indicator LEDs are colorlesswhen the detector is in quiscent state & red in alarm.
