French chalk (powdered) is often used as an abrasive to polish something else, usually metal or another stone. It is very very fine and puts a soft glow on the object or material you are polishing. You mix it with a tiny bit of oil or water to polish the object and use a soft cloth like an old fabric baby diaper or cotton t-shirt.
