Specifications for construction aggregates have been developed for a variety of construction applications. The most important construction materials specifications for aggregates are for roadway and pavement construction (including hot-mix asphalt, granular base and granular sub-base), and for concrete materials used in buildings, civil engineering structures and infrastructure construction. In Ontario, specifications for aggregates used in road/pavement and transportation construction are presented in the Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications (OPSS) and related special provisions developed by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and other agencies. Specifications for aggregates used in concrete materials across Canada are covered within the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) CAN3-A23.1 specification. Other specifications may also be used for airports work (Canadian Master General Specifications and Public Works/Government Services Canada, for instance), and are usually based on American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. Agencies may also have their own specific requirements based on local experience or material availability.
