As a dietary supplement it is most importantly used in human diet as well as in animal food products. For the former, it is used in iodisation of table salt to prevent iodide deficiency in people whose diet include low or no quantity of seafood. Povidone Iodine is used as a 2.5% buffered solution for the prevention of neonatal conjunctivitis. Pleurodesis is a procedure that is performed for the prevention of plerothorax and pleural effusion. Povidone Iodine is used in pleurodesis as well. Use of povidone iodine may cause skin irritation as side effect. It may also cause high level of sodium in blood and kidney problems if used on large wounds.
