Argon is a versatile industrial gas used in welding such as of specialty alloys, and in the production of light bulbs and lasers. Argon is used in combination with other gases to weld auto parts, frames, mufflers and other automotive parts. Used to maintain temperature and consistency of composition, argon prevents oxidation during processing. It also flushes out carbon monoxide and reduces chromium losses during the Argon-Oxygen Decarburization of stainless steel refining process. As an inert gas, it can also be used to provide an oxygen- and nitrogen- free environment for heat treating processes.

Carbon dioxide is an industrial gas used in the pulp and paper industry to control pH levels, enhance pulp yield, and wash brown stock and bleached stock. A safe alternative to mineral acids, carbon dioxide replaces chemicals used in pH reduction lowering costs and improving plant safety and flexibility. Carbon dioxide is most often mixed with argon as a shielding gas used to prevent atmospheric contamination of molten metal in electric arc welding processes.
