Switch contacts (electrical alarm contacts) make or break an electric control circuit dependent upon the position of the instrument pointer. The switch contacts are adjustable over the full extent of the scale range (see DIN 16085), and are mounted predominantly below the dial, though also partly on top of the dial. The instrument pointer (actual value pointer) moves freely across the entire scale range, independent of the setting. Both circular gauges and square panel-mounted gauges feature an adjustment key in the centre of the window. Contacts in flush panel-mounted gauges are adjustable using a screwdriver through the window. Several switch contacts can also be set to at the same setpoint. Contact actuation is made when the actual value pointer travels beyond or below the desired set value.

Contact protection relays are used in type 821 contact devices. They increase the switching reliability and switching capacity of electromechanical contact devices and lower their contact voltage. Undesired switching operations of contact devices caused by vibrations are significantly reduced by a drop-out delay of 0.5 sec. On the side of the contact they operate with a lower control voltage, however, on the output side they can be highly loaded. Contact protection relays consist of a power supply unit, control unit, switching amplifier and relay output. The contacts are supplied by a control unit with 35 to 40 V clocked DC (i.e. only every hundredth switching occurs under voltage). This enables the optimum contact protection and switching reliability for millions of switching cycles.

The WIKA inductive contact device is a contact-free device. Basically, it consists of an initiator, located on the nominal value pointer, including its fully potted electronics and mechanical construction with a movable control vane. The control vane is moved by the instrument pointer (nominal value pointer). The initiator is supplied with DC voltage. If the control vane moves into the clearance of the initiator, its internal resistance increases (= activated state / the initiator has high-resistance). The change in the current rating arising from this is the input signal for the switching amplifier of the control device.

Diaphragm seals are used to protect the pressure measuring instrument from aggressive, adhesive, crystallising, corrosive, environmentally hazardous or toxic media.
A diaphragm made of the appropriate material provides for the separation from the medium to be measured. Thus even the most difficult measuring requirements can be met by combining measuring instruments with diaphragm seals.

A fluid inside the system, which can be chosen to suit the particular application, hydraulically transmits the pressure to the measuring instrument. Almost limitless application possibilities exist due to the large number of available variants, such as diaphragm seal designs or materials.
