317L is molybdenum bearing austenitic stainless steel similar to 316, but with higher molybdenum alloy content. It is also known as UNS S31700, and is primarily comprised of 18% to 20% chromium and 11% to 15% nickel.317L offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than conventional Stainless Steel. It is a low carbon grade which provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes.

The ASTM A240 specification covers chromium, chromium-nickel, and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip for pressure vessels and for general applications. The steel shall conform to the requirements as to chemical composition specified. The material shall conform to the mechanical properties specified.Stainless steel grade 317L is a low carbon version of grade 317 stainless steel Sheet It has the same high strength and corrosion resistance as 317 steel but can produce stronger welds due to the low carbon content.
