The gloss value of the paint applied on a vehicle can be measured by the amount of light reflected back when it is directed towards a given part in a particular angle.

Vibration testing mimics the conditions that a product or structure might see during its lifetime while under a test environment. Intended to ensure that products are robust and perform safely during operation or transit, vibration testing detects performance issues and potential failures before they start. It is usually distinguished on the basis of mechanical shock testing and its application for different periods which may vary from a few minutes to weeks. Moreover, in order to produce a defined vibration, we use electromagnetic vibration exciter (aka a shaker). This helps in converting electric signals into mechanical movements which are further controlled to maintain the vibration force or level as per specified standards. Why Vibration Testing? Vibration tests are done on various equipment but there are many reasons behind the application of this test. Test Method: IS: 2386 (P-7) 1963 Chloride Content: The total chloride content of aggregate is usually measured to assess whether the aggregate’s contribution to the total chloride content of a concrete mix will be low enough to prevent the early onset of corrosion of any embedded steel reinforcement. Test Method: IS: 4032-1985 Clay Lumps and friable Particles: This test helps in determining the percentage of clay lumps and friable particles in aggregate. Clay lumps in aggregate shall be defined as any particles or aggregation of particles which when thoroughly wet can be distorted when squeezed between the thumb and forefinger, or will disintegrate into individual grain sizes when immersed for a short period in water. Friable particles are defined as particles which vary from the basic aggregate particles such, that they may either readily disintegrate under normal handling and mixing pressures, imposed upon them by construction procedures, or break down after being incorporated into the work. The test specimen is subjected to a compressive load (usually from a hydraulic machine) until failure. Test Method: IS: 4031 (P-6) 1988 Fineness Test: The fineness of cement has an important bearing on the rate of hydration and hence on the rate of gain of strength and also on the rate of evolution of heat. Greater fineness increases the surface area available for hydration, causing greater early strength and more rapid generation of heat. Cement fineness plays a major role in controlling concrete properties. The fineness of cement affects the place ability, workability, and water content of a concrete mixture, much like the amount of cement used in concrete does. Test Method: IS: 4031 (P-2)1990

Design Mix: This test helps in determining the suitable ingredients of concrete and determining their relative amounts with the objective of producing a concrete of the required strength, durability, and workability as economical as possible is termed as concrete mix design. It involves studying properties of Aggregate, Cement, Water & Admixture (if any), and is used to determine the proper Concrete Mix Design. Test Method: IS: 10262 Ultrasonic Survey: Ultrasonic concrete testing is based on the pulse velocity method to provide information on the uniformity of concrete, cavities, cracks and defects. The pulse velocity in a material is directly proportional to its density and its elastic properties which in turn depends on the compressive strength and the quality of the concrete. It is, therefore, feasible to obtain information about the properties of components by sonic investigations. Test Method: IS 13311 (Part 1) Chloride Content: Measuring the calcium chloride content of concrete is used to determine the dryness of concrete. This test is useful to tell if the concrete is ready for projects such as installing flooring on top of the concrete slab. Though some conditions can alter the results, such as the seasons of the year, the porosity of the concrete, or the mixture of the concrete, a calcium chloride test serves as a good indicator of the usability of concrete. Test Method: IS: 6925-1973 Chloride Permeability: The chloride permeability of concrete subjected to static and repeated compressive loading is evaluated by using this test method. The test results indicate that the chloride permeability of concrete subjected to static and repeated loading at a gradually increasing rate and its residual strain. This test covers the determination of the electrical conductance of concrete to provide a rapid indication of its resistance to the penetration of chloride ions. Test Method: AASHTO T277

Calorific value (Gross/Net): The calorific value of a fuel is the amount of heat released by its combustion – under regular state and constant pressure. Proximate analysis – Moisture, Volatile Matter, Ash and Fixed Carbon: Proximate analysis indicates the percentage by weight of the Fixed Carbon, Volatiles, Ash, and Moisture Content in coal. The quantity of volatile combustible matter and fixed carbon directly play a part in the heating of coal. Fixed carbon plays a significant role in heating the coal during burning whereas ignition of fuel is influenced by volatile matter content. The ash content also plays an important role in designing furnace grate, pollution control equipment, ash handling systems of a furnace and combustion volume. Ultimate Analysis: The ultimate analysis indicates the various elemental chemical constituents such as Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Sulphur, etc. It helps understand the amount of air necessary for the composition and volume of the combustion gases. This information is needed for the measurement of flue duct design, flame temperature, etc. Ash Analysis: Ash content of coal is the non-combustible residue left after coal is burnt. It represents the bulk mineral matter after carbon, oxygen, sulphur and water (from clays) has been driven off during combustion. When the coal is thoroughly burnt, ash material is quantified as a percentage of the original weight and this output is analysed. Ash Fusion Temperature Analysis: The behaviour of coal’s ash residue at high temperature is a critical factor in selecting coals for steam power generation. Most furnaces are designed in a manner that can remove ash residue. Coal ash that converts into a clinker a hard glassy slag, which usually requires cleaning and is unsatisfactory. By removing molten liquid, furnaces can handle the clinker. In a high-temperature furnace, ash fusion temperatures are analysed by viewing a moulded specimen through an observation window.

Rebound hammer test is conducted to find out the compressive strength of concrete by using rebound hammer. The rebound of an elastic mass depends upon the hardness of the surface when it strikes. When the plunger of rebound hammer test is pressed against the surface of the concrete, the mass rebounds and the extent of such a rebound depends upon the surface hardness of the concrete. The spring-loaded hammer must travel with a consistent and reproducible velocity. The rebound distance of the steel hammer from the steel plunger is measured on a linear scale attached to the frame of the instrument. The tests can be performed in horizontal, vertically upward, vertically downward or any intermediate angled positions in relation to the surface. The devices are furnished with correlation curves by the manufacturer. ASTM C805 now states that these references to the relationship between the rebound hammer and compressive strength provided by the manufacturer shall be used only to provide indications of relative concrete strength at different locations in a structure. To obtain greater accuracy of test results, it is recommended that the user develops a correlation for the device on each concrete mixture design to be tested and at the intended test angle. Procedure to extract the appropriate result: Prior to the test, the rebound hammer should be tested against the anvil to get reliable results for which the manufacturer of the rebound hammer. indicates the range of readings on the anvil, suitable for different types of rebound hammer. In ultrasonic testing, very short ultrasonic pulse-waves with centre frequencies ranging from 0.1-15 MHz and occasionally up to 50 MHz are launched on the material to detect internal flaws or to characterize the material. In reflection mode, the transducer performs both the sending and the receiving functions of the pulsed waves; as the “sound” is reflected back to the device. Thermal Conductivity Testing Thermal conductivity testing is the ability of a material to transmit heat and it is measured in watts per meter- kelvin of surface area for a temperature gradient of 1K per unit thickness of 1m. It is denoted by k, λ, or κ. Heat transfer is comparatively slower across materials of low thermal conductivity whereas higher in materials with high thermal conductivity. Hence, the application of this material varies with its conductivity; for example, materials with high conductivity are preferably used as a heat sink and for thermal insulation, a material with low thermal conductivity testing is considered. There are certain factors affecting the thermal resistivity (reciprocal of thermal conductivity) such as temperature, humidity, composition, application time, the proportion of solid matter or the voids in materials.
