The difference between tactile & non-tactile membrane keyboard is that non-tactile rely on a sensory touch than tactile touch, such as audio or visual stimuli that alerts the user to switch the keyboard off. Non-tactile keyboard are used in tough environment and are more conductive in applications where large, hidden or irregular shaped keys are requirements. The diagram shown aside gives a clear view of a typical non- tactile membrane keyboard.

Keyboards use a variety of switch technologies. Capacitive switches are considered to be non-mechanical because they do not physically complete a circuit like most other keyboard technologies. Instead, current constantly flows through all parts of the key matrix. Each key is spring-loaded and has a tiny plate attached to the bottom of it.

PCF based keyboards , consists of two or more layers of polyester film, screen printed with the electrically conductive circuit. These two layers are isolated with a spacer which has air vents for Perfect operation of the switch.
