According to Markandeya Purana, one of the Saptha Virgos, Varahi is the lord of the northern direction and the giver. There is a temple for Varakhi at a place called "Chaurasi" in the Puri district, Odisha state. In Tamil Nadu, there is a separate shrine for Varagi at Periyakoil in Thanjavur. There are also temples in Jaffna, Uttarakhosamangai, Tiruvarur, and in Tirupur chengapalli, Seraikanniyar temple. Shri Varahi Devi is the female counterpart of Varaha, the boar Avatar of Lord Vishnu.
