Dewaxed Shellac (Solvent Process) : In this process, the seedlac and solvent, usually ethyl alcohol, are mixed in a dissolving tank, refluxed for about an hour and then filtered to remove impurities. The filtered resin is sent through evaporators that remove the alcohol solvent, rendering it a viscous liquid. This liquid is then dropped onto rollers, which force it into sheets. The sheets are then are dried and flaked apart. The solvent process lends itself to manufacture of different type of shellac containing varying percentage of shellac wax. Dewaxed or partly dewaxed shellac may be manufactured by this process. Dewaxed shellacs have much better transparency and moisture resistance. Grades of dewaxed shellac : SSF Lemon - Rich Yellow-Orange in colour SSF Orange - Deep rich Yellow Orange colour tones. SSF Garnet - Deep Rich Brown-Red cast flake shellac. Garnet is the darkest color we carry. Used to highlight dark woods like walnut SSF Super Blonde - It is the standard light colored shellac. It imparts a slight golden tone to the wood. SSF Blonde - Light Pale Transparency. Blonde has a little more golden color than Super Blonde. Application : Dewaxed Shellac is necessary if the shellac will be used as a primer/sealer, undercoater or transitional coating. A Shellac seal coat (made with dewaxed shellac) may be topcoated by almost any other clear coating or with paint. (always test materials for compatibility in you application.)

Despite the removal of much of the red dye from the lac seeds in the refining process, shellac remains an orangish solution after processing is complete. Some consumers prefer a clear shellac finish which can be obtained by bleaching the colour from shellac. Bleaching begins with dissolving the seedlac, which is alkali-soluble, in an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. The solution is then passed through a fine screen to remove insoluble lac, dirt, twigs, etc. The resin is then bleached with a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite to the desired color. The shellac is then precipitated from the solution by the addition of dilute sulfuric acid, filtered, and washed with water. It is dried in vacuum driers and ground into a white powder. The type of tree, climate conditions, the region where harvested, and the time of year harvested all play a role in determining the different colors and grades of shellac. Hand made shellac is produced by properly blending Seedlac into long narrow cloth bag and heating one end over charcoal fire and the other end is attached to a windless and is gradually twisted. The heat produced by the charcoal fire melts the lac which is forced out through the cloth by pressure. The molten lac is scraped out and drawn into sheets manually and left to dry. This process requires considerable manual skill and long experience. Grades In Hand Made Shellac : SSF Hand Made Lemon Shellac- an excellent general purpose shellac light yellow creamy colour. SSF Light Pure Button Lac- Light Pure is similar in shade to Orange, but with a apricot tint. SSF Kusmi Button Lac- Develops rich tones on woods like mahogany, red oak, cherry and douglas fir. Machine Made Shellac(Heat Process) : Seedlac is melted onto steam-heated grids. The molten lac is forced by hydraulic pressure through a sieve or screen, either of cloth or fine mesh. The filtered shellac is collected and transferred to a steam-heated kettle, which then drops the molten liquid onto rollers. The molten lac is then stretched by means of rollers into long and continuous sheets which is broken into pieces to form the machine-made shellac under heat process. The Shellac obtained is kept in cool atmosphere for a day in order to improve its life. This shellac has an impurity content varying from 0.6 to about 1%. There are various grades of machine made shellac under the heat process mentioned above. The most popular being TN, Lemon and Orange. All the three grades are exported in bulk amounts in several countries. Grades In Machine Made Shellac : SSF MM TN Shellac-Shellac of a medium yellow color similar in tone to the lemon yellow/orange. It is extremely thin and dissolves very quickly. SSF Orange shellac - an excellent general purpose shellac light orange colour. SSF Lemon shellac - an excellent general purpose shellac light yellow creamy colour. It is then washed in large vessels called as �WASHERS� again and again and at the same time rubbing the lac against the sides of the Vessels to break open the insect bodies and dissolve the colouring matter in water. The lac thus cleaned is spread on large, clean, open air floor to dry. After drying, it is winnowed and sieved to get the commercial variety of Seedlac .
