Stainless steel, an alloy of steel that is comprised of a minimum of 10.5% chromium by mass, has innumerable industrial applications owing to its high level of resistance to corrosion. Because of this, stainless steel is used in commercial kitchens and food processing plants since it does not require a coat of paint or any other surface finishes for protection against corrosive environments and can be sterilised with relative ease. Stainless steel manufacturers deal in multiple grades, of which there are over 150, and surface finishes depending on the environment the alloy will be subjected to. The alloy, often moulded into coils, sheets, plates, wires and tubing, is used in the production of high-grade surgical instruments, architectural constructs, vehicular exhaust systems, subsea pipelines, pressure vessels in the Oil and Gas industry and in its most basic form, cutlery and utensils for the household. Another key attribute of stainless steel is the fact that it is 100% recyclable and there happens to be a commercial market for reusable scrap in the form of coils and sheets.
