Synoptophore is an instrument which compensates for the angle of squint and allows the stimuli to be presented to both eyes simultaneously. It is an ophthalmic instrument which is used for diagnosing the imbalance of the eye muscle and treating them by orthoptic methods.

It is used to investigate the potential for binocular function in the presence of a manifest squint.

Consists of two cylindrical tubes with a mirrored right angled bend

• A +6.50 D lens in each eyepiece which optically sets the testing distance to about 6 metres.

• It can measure horizontal, vertical and torsional misalignments simultaneously.

ESTIMATION OF GRADES OF BINOCULAR VISION

• Grade 1- (SIMULTANEOUS PERCEPTION) tested by two dissimilar but not mutually antagonistic pictures, such as a bird and a cage
• Grade 2- (FUSION) Ability of the two eyes to produce a composite picture from two similar pictures, each of which is incomplete in one small different detail.
• Grade 3- (stereopsis) Ability to obtain an impression of depth by the superimposition of two pictures of the same object which have been taken from slightly different angles.

The model eye is on a simple stand and, fortunately, has been made to provide a scope reflex that is easier to interpret than real reflexes. However, since no trial frame can be used here, you need to take care when judging the working distance and in being aware of the cylindrical axis. This situation is similar to performing retinoscopy on children (who are averse to trial frames).

This practice eye can be used for practicing and evaluating retinoscopy skills.

Because light passes only through the center of the eye's lens, defects in the shape of the lens (errors of refraction) have no effect while the occluder is used. In this way the ophthalmologist, orthoptist or optometrist can estimate the maximum improvement in a patient's vision that can be attained by lenses to correct errors of refraction.^[1]This can be used to distinguish visual defects caused by refractive error, which improve when the occluder is used, from other problems, which do not.^[2]The pinhole occluder can also be used in testing visual acuity inmydriaticpatients.

The Handle:

The handle is retractable and is located at the base of the instrument. This is where the patient holds the apparatus.

The Eye Piece:

Located anteriorly, the eye piece is where the patient looks into.

The Eye-piece lens holder:

Mainly used to hold lens for patients who have difficulties seeing the board with their glasses

The Septa:

There are 2 septa that separates the eye piece so that the patient has two separate fields of view.

The Scale Card:

Used to measure the deviation of heterophorias, small heterotropias (with NRC) and also torsion. The scale card has the horizontal, vertical and torsional scales. The board also contains the red and white arrows. This will be further discuss throughout the video.

The Torsion Lever:

On the measuring board there is an adjustable lever which the patient subjectively aligns to measure torsion.
