Sintered neodymium iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets are the most powerful commercially available magnets in the world. With energy products typically between 33 and 52 MGOe, they are the perfect solution to a host of magnetic applications demanding very strong, highly coercive magnets that are available in large quantities at a relatively low cost. Due to their impressive properties, their small size relative to their strength, NdFeB magnets are increasingly replacing those made from older materials such as ceramic and alnico, as well as other rare-earth materials such as samarium cobalt.

Sintered Hard Ferrite or “Ceramic” magnets are among the most popular permanent magnets available today. They are made form a combination of either Barium or Strontium Ferrite and Iron Oxide, and exhibit a high degree of coercive strength, making them more resistant to demagnetization. They are a low-cost solution to a wide array of magnetic component applications.

Alnico magnets extremely resistant to elevated temperatures, and have relatively high energy products. They are made primarily from alloys of Aluminum, Nickel, and Cobalt, and may be either cast or sintered. Cast Alnico can be made into intricate shapes that may not be possible with other materials.

The original “rare earth” magnet material, Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) has been commercially available for more than three decades. While it has been replaced in many projects by newer materials, SmCo continues to perform in applications where no other materials can provide the required combination of characteristics. SmCo magnets boast a unique set of attributes – high magnetic strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good stability at elevated temperatures. SmCo magnets can be used in situations where operating temperatures will exceed 500° F. As a result, in applications requiring a strong, corrosion resistant magnet that will be exposed to high temperatures, SmCo remains unmatched.
