In the simplest terms , all reactive dyes are made up of three basic units, a chormophore , a bridge and a reactive group groups (either a haloheteocycle or an activated double bond). These dyes are used for dyeing of cellulosic fibers and when these are applied to a cellulosic fiber in an alkaline dye bath , they form a covalent bond with hydroxyl group of the fiber by chemically reacting with fiber. The covalent bond formed between the dye molecule and fiber make dye molecule a part of the fiber molecule.

Vat dyes are insoluble in water. Before dying they need to be reduced and solubilized by reductive agent in alkaline solution, then dyeing. They are brilliant in shades, full range in colors and of good dyeing fastness properties on fibers. They also have good leveling, dispersing property and high affinity for cellulosic fibers. Most of them have excellent light and washing fastness, so vat dye is one of the most important synthetic dyes.

Sulphur dyes find their main use for dyeing cotton and regenerated cellulose viscose in the form of Yarn, piece goods or as a component in blends. Dyeing produced have a good all-round fastness to wet processing, except for hy-pochiorite. Sulphur dyes are insoluble in water and are converted to their soluble (leuco) form using an alkaline reducing agent like Sodium Sulphide (Na2S).Sulphur dyes are dark urually, such as blue, black, brown. Direct Dyes are molecules that adhere to the fabric molecules without help from other chemicals. Direct dyes are defined as anionic dyes with substantivity for cellulosic fibres, normally applied from an aqueous dyebath containing an electrolyte, either sodium chloride (NaCl) or sodium sulfate (Na2SO4).. The dyeing process with direct dyes is very simple, Direct dyeing is normally carried out in a neutral or slight alkaline dyebath, at or near boiling point , but a separate aftertreatment such as cationic dye fixing , to enhance wet fastness has been necessary for most direct dyeing .

These are nonionic in nature.Disperse dyes are characterized by the absence of solubilizing groups and low molecular weight. From a chemical point of view more than 50 % of disperse dyes are simple azo compounds, about 25 % are anthraquinones and the rest are methine, nitro and naphthoquinone dyes.

Basic dyes(These dyes are also known as cationic dyes) This a class of synthetic dyes , that act as bases and when made soluble in water , they form a colored cationic salt , which can react with the anionic sites on the surface of the substrate. The basic dyes produce bright shades with high tinctorial values, on textile materials.

Acrylic Cationic dyes are a range of modified basic (cationic) dyestuffs which are eminently suitable for the dyeing of all types of acrylic fibre, in all forms, including blends. These dyes possess excellent fastness to light and wet treatments.

These dyes are normally very complex in structure but have large aromatic molecules, having a sulphonyl or amino group which makes them soluble in water. Most of the acid dyes belongs to following three main structural molecules, 1. Anthraquinon type 2. Azo dye type 3. Triphenylmethane type.
