Argon (Ar) is a monatomic, colorless, odorless, tasteless and nontoxic gas, present in the atmosphere at a concentration of just under 1% (0.934%) by volume. Argon is a member of a special group of gases known as the "rare, " "noble, " or "inert" gases. Other gases in this group are helium, neon, krypton, xenon and radon. They are monatomic gases with a totally filled outermost shell of electrons. The terms "noble" and "inert" have been used to indicate that their ability to chemically interact with other materials is extremely weak. All members of this group emit light when electrically excited. Argon produces a pale blue-violet light.
Argon's normal boiling point is a very cold -302.6F (-185.9C). The gas is approximately 1.4 times as heavy as air and is slightly soluble in water. Argon's freezing point is only a few degrees lower than its normal boiling point, -308.8F (-199.3C).
Gaseous chemical element, symbol: He, atomic number: 2 and atomic weight 4, 0026 g/mol. Helium is one of the noble gases of group O in the periodic table. Its the second lightest element. The main helium source in the world is a series of fields of natural gas in the United States.
Helium is a colourless, odourless, insipid and non-toxic gas. Its less soluble in water than any other gas. Its the less reactive element and doesnt essentially form chemical compounds. The density and viscosity of helium vapour are very low. The termic conductivity and the caloric content are exceptionally high. Helium can be liquefied, but its condensation temperature is the lowest among all the known substances.
Helium has many unique properties: low boiling point, low density, low solubility, high thermal conductivity and inertness, so it is use for any application which can explioit these properties. Helium was the first gas used for filling balloons and dirigibles. This application goes on in altitude research and for meteorological balloons. The main use of helium is as an inert protection gas in autogenous welding. Its biggest potential is found in applications at very low temperatures. Helium is the only cooler which is capable of reaching temperatures lower than 15 K (-434F). The main application of ultralow temperature is in the development of the superconductivity state, in which the resistance to the electricity flux is almost zero. Other applications are its use as pressurizing gas in liquid propellants for rockets, in helium-oxygen mixtures for divers, as working fluid in nuclear reactors cooled down by gas and as gas carrier in chemical analysis by gas chromatography.
Source:The most common source of argon is an air sepration plant. Air contain appox 0.93%(vol) argon. a crude argon stream containing up to 5% oxygenis removed from the main air sepration column vai a secondary column the crude argon is the further purified to produce the various commercial grades required .
Argon may also be recovered form the exhaust streams of certianammoinia plants.
Applicatioin:Argon is one of most common carrier gases in gas chromotography. argon is used as a carrier gas in sputtering plsma etching and ion implantations and a blanket atmoshpere in crystal growth.
Argon is also the choice gas for ICP SpectroScopy.
Argon is used in atomic absorption spectrometry as a blanket gas in the graaphite furnace.one of the most common application of argon , either pure or in various mixtures, is a shilding gas of arc welding.
Argon is used in blends with fluorine and helium in excimer lasers.
Argon is one of the principal gas used for filling incandescent lamps , generally in a mixture with nitrogen , krypton or neon, for phosphorescent tubes in mixture with neon, helium and mercury vapour and for thyratron radio tubes in mixtures with neon.
Argon is used as an insulation gas in high-effciency multi-pane windows to improve thermal insulation.
Liquid argon is used in cryosurgery e.g., cryoablation to destroy cancer cells.
Argon , R-740, is used in gas mixtures for non-CFC ultralow temperature refrigeration application.the pharmaceutical industry used argon to displace oxygen in the top of intravenous drug containers, extending product shelf-life
