The rising costs of power can have a major impact on the bottom-line of any corporate or commercial organization especially, as the availability of power is a major concern in several parts of the country. For service driven companies such as IT services and BPOs, comfort air-conditioning is a critical aspect of the work environment. These organizations often work on a 24X7 basis and air-conditioning power expenses form a significant part of their cost of operations. Air-conditioning constitutes nearly 60-65% of the power consumption in office buildings and this figure rises to as high as 75% in hotels and hospitals. Very often, in order to lower energy costs and limit aircon tonnage, the quantity of fresh air is cut down, resulting in many health problems arising from poor indoor air quality (IAQ). Productivity losses of around 10% are identified in buildings with poor IAQ. Legal challenges are also on the rise, the onus being on facility owners, design consultants and architects.
