An az is a place typically containing numerous physical data centers, whereas a region is a set of azs in geographic proximity linked by low latency network connections. An aws client can spin up virtual machines (vms) and replicate information in various azs to obtain an extremely reliable infrastructure resistant to individual server errors or a complete data center.
