When the two beams are recombined in this way, they make an interference pattern which is recorded on the film. If the film is illuminated with coherent light, the light will be diffracted as if by a diffraction grating, giving rise to a diffraction pattern containing the zeroth and first orders. The first order reproduces the full wave front of the light scattered from the original object and gives a 3D virtual image of the object for the light transmitted through the film and a 3D real image for the light reflected from the film.
