Steel can be recycled almost indefinitely without losing its properties. Obsolete ferrous scrap is derived from steel-containing goods at the end of their useful lives (e.g. old cars, old building structure steel, etc.). Mild steel (MS) is the most common form of steel because its price is relatively low while it provides material properties that are acceptable for many applications. Mild steel contains 0.16–0.29% carbon; therefore it is neither brittle nor ductile. Mild steel has a relatively low tensile strength, but it is cheap and malleable; surface hardness can be increased through carburizing.
