They are often called as programmable logic controller or programmable controller. It is basically digital computer used for automation of electromachanical processes, such as control of machinery on factory amusement rides, or light fixtures. Plcs are universally adopted in many industries to control the various machines installed on shopfloor reducing manpower. Plc is designed such that user can program the contol action (called output) corresponding to received input. Along with that, plc has multiple inputs and output arrangements, extended temperature ranges, immunity to electrical noise, and resistance to vibration and impact; which makes it ideal for rigid industrial environment. Plc controller uses battery-backed-up or non volatile memory to store programs to control machine operation. For plc, desired output must be produced corresponding to received input conditions within stipulated time period, making it efficient hard real time system.
