Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is a factory-manufactured hydraulic barrier consisting of a layer of bentonite clay encapsulated between geotextiles or bonded to a geomembrane. It is used as a cost-effective and efficient solution for fluid containment in a variety of environmental and civil engineering applications. GCLs combine the low permeability of natural sodium bentonite with the strength and durability of geotextiles or geomembranes, providing excellent sealing performance. Typically, they exhibit a hydraulic conductivity of less than 5 10 cm/sec. The bentonite layer swells when hydrated, creating a self-sealing system that is highly resistant to punctures and installation damage. GCLs are generally 5 to 10 mm thick, with bentonite mass per unit area ranging from 3.5 to 5.0 kg/m. They maintain performance across a wide range of temperatures and chemical environments. Common applications include landfill liners and covers, mining operations, pond and canal liners, and wastewater treatment facilities. GCLs conform to surfaces more easily than traditional clay liners, making them particularly effective for irregular terrains. They are also lightweight and easier to install, reducing labor and transportation costs.
