Tap Holder
A floating tap holder does the same thing. The machine is controlling the Z-axis rigidly, but the tap holder has a float that allows the tap to be pulled in or out at a feed rate that is proportional to the spindle speed and pitch. It allows the tap to move axially independent of the machines axis.
