What is IP55 rating?

IP55 stands for Ingress Protection55, and it indicates that a phone has been tested against dust and water for up to 55 minutes at a pressure of one atmosphere (or about 10 centimeters of air).

To put this in simpler terms: That means that for most phones with an IP55 rating, no problem should occur even after being left exposed to water from any angle including from above if you happen to have your phone out of sight at ground level.

IP ratings are an international standard, dating back to 1959. Theyre meant to identify the resistance of a device to dust and water. As a rule of thumb the higher the left or right number, the higher the protection it has against dust or water.

Is IP55 waterproof?

The short answer: No, IP55 is not waterproof. Thats not to say that IP55 is not a good water-resistant rating. It is, but the most important factor that makes a phone waterproof is the O-ring seal, which is typically found around the camera and on the back of some devices, such as the iPhone X.

The seal is what keeps water out without also letting dust in. IP55, on the other hand, is not designed to keep water out but only to keep it at a certain level for a certain amount of time. So, yes, it will survive a rainstorm or an accidental dip in the pool. But it wont stop a hosepipe or a garden sprinkler.

IP55 Water and Dust Resistance testing method

The test protocol for IP55 is very similar to the one used for IP68. First, the device is submerged in water and then dried off with a clean cloth. Water pressure is applied for a set amount of time. The IP rating scale is as follows:

IP54: Protection against dust for up to 5 minutes under water pressure of one bar

IP55: Protection against dust for up to 55 minutes under water pressure of one bar

IP56: Protection against dust for up to 5 minutes under pressure of two bar

IP58: Protection against dust for up to 30 minutes under pressure of two bar

  • ISO 17020 Accredited Inspection Agency ISO 17025 Accredited Testing Laboratory

CDG is an ISO 17020-accredited inspection agency & ISO 17025-accredited testing laboratory for ISO 17712 testing & certification.

What is new in ISO 17712:2013?

Proof of tampering remains an essential area in the new edition, but there is a significant change in approach. The new edition addresses tampering via third party procedure inspections as part of the manufacturers ISO 9001 quality operational processes.

ISO 17712 no longer needs third party laboratory testing against exact tamper related criteria. Instead, the necessity for tamper-related quality processes include internally-generated and -managed tests of tamper proof as part of a manufacturers documented quality program like ISO 9001.

A manufacturer may choose to conduct the tamper-evident testing in-house or employ a third party laboratory. In any case the testing would be against the manufacturers test protocol and specification. Since Clause 6 has neither tamper-evident test procedures nor a necessity for accredited testing, an outside lab cannot certify conformance with ISO 17712 Clause 6. A third party lab in such a condition basically provides a lab report to its client.

Benefits of ISO Pas 17712:2013

Expand safety

Extend correct collection of taxes and duties

Get better border protection

Important increase in inspection rate

Minimize corruption

Minimize container tampering and thefts

Facilitate trade

Speed up logistic processes

Seals that conform to this International Standard are suitable for other applications, such as bulk railcars or truck trailers used in cross-border and domestic operations. Users and regulatory agencies can apply this International Standard to other applications as they deem appropriate

high-security seal-seal that is constructed and manufactured of material such as metal or metal cable with the intent to delay intrusion. High-security seals can generally be removed with substantial bolt cutters or cable cutters.

security seal-seal that is constructed and manufactured of material that provides limited resistance to intrusion and requires lightweight tools for removal

indicative seal-seal that is constructed and manufactured of material that can easily be broken by hand or by using a simple snipping tool or shear

Manufacturer-company or entity that either owns the seal-producing factory or contracts to buy made-to-order seals for resale from a third-party factory.

Scope

This International Standard establishes uniform procedures for the classification, acceptance, and withdrawal of mechanical freight container seals. It provides a single source of information on mechanical seals which are acceptable for securing freight containers in international commerce.

NOTE The purpose of mechanical seals is, as part of a security system, to determine whether a freight container has been tampered with, i.e., whether there has been unauthorized entry into the container through its doors. Seals can be effective only if seal users properly select, store, account for, apply, document, and attend to seals prior to use and in use; while these issues are not addressed in this International Standard, they are relevant to successful use of the seals covered by this International Standard.

  • ISO 17020 Accredited Inspection Agency ISO 17025 Accredited Testing Laboratory

CDG is an ISO 17020-accredited inspection agency & ISO 17025-accredited testing laboratory for ISO 17712 testing & certification.

WHAT IS ISO 17712? ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the worlds largest developer of voluntary International Standards. A standard is a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose. ISO International Standards ensure that products and services are safe, reliable, and of good quality.

The ISO 17712 establishes uniform procedures for the classification, acceptance, and withdrawal of mechanical freight container seals. It provides a single source of information on mechanical seals which are acceptable for securing freight containers in international commerce.

ISO STANDARDS FOR SECURITY SEALS

The current ISO 17712 standard requires independent confirmation in three areas:

1. Testing to determine a security seals physical strength (as barriers to entry). ISO 17712 defines three types of classes of seal strength or barrier capacity: I for Indicative; S for Security; and H for High Security. C-TPAT requires the use of H class seals. Suppliers must use independent third-party test laboratories to validate a seals classification. Labs must be accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025 (General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories) to perform testing specific to ISO 17712.

2. Auditing of manufacturers security-related business processes.

Poor security-related practices can undercut the effectiveness of a high-quality security seal. ISO 17712s Annex A defines over two dozen required practices, such as facility risk assessments and access controls to production and storage areas. Suppliers conformance with Annex A should also be demonstrated through an independent certification provider that is accredited to audit compliance with the ISO standards.

3. Seals be designed and constructed with tamper indicative features that generate tell-tale evidence of tampering.

Security Seal manufacturers must be able to demonstrate to, and obtain certification from, an accredited auditor from an independent third-party organization that their high security seals have built-in tamper evidence features. If an independent third-party organization accredited to ISO 17020 verifies conformity, it will provide the manufacturer with a certificate of compliance that documents that the seals submitted for review do reflect tell-tale evidence of tampering generated by attempts to defeat a correctly closed and affixed seal.

In order to verify that a High Security Seal is certified as ISO 17712:2013, contact your security seal supplier and ask them to submit the ISO certificates mentioned

The manufacturer of the seal has to be ISO 9001 certified.

The manufacturer of the seal has to be ISO 17712:2013 Annex A (Best Practices) certified.

The mechanical strength of the seal has to meet or exceed the requirements of ISO 17712 Clause 5 High Security Seal category. This is documented by an ISO 17712:2013 H laboratory report / certificate for the seal.

Ingress Protection forms part of the process of determining the level of protection provided by equipment enclosures. The test methods and definitions of the Ingress Protection (IP) Codes are covered under the EN 60529, EN60598 and EN60079-0 Standards.

The Degree of Protection provided by an enclosure is indicated by the IP coding such as IPXXCH

IP IP is the Code letters

X First Characteristics numeral Dust Protection (numerals 0-6 or latter X)

X Second Characteristics numeral Water Protection (numeral 0-8 or latter X)

C Additional Letter optional, letters A, B, C, D

H Supplementary letters optional, letters H, M, S, W

Applicable Standard: IS/IEC 60529.

First digit: 6Definition: Dust must not enter at all.Test conditions: The test is carried out in a dust chamber in which talcum powder is being kept suspended in the air by means of a dust distributor or similar device. The enclosure which is being tested is placed in the test chamber while a vacuum pump keeps the pressure in the enclosure below the atmospheric pressure of the environment according to the standard.Conditions for acceptance: The protection is satisfactory if there is no visible dust deposit within the enclosure after completion of the test.

Second digit: 8 Definition: Water must not enter in a quantity that could have harmful effects if the enclosure is kept under water under conditions agreed between the manufacturer and the user; however, these must be more difficult than those under . IPX8 Test conditions: The enclosure is completely immersed in a water basin. The immersion depth as well as the test time are dependent on the conditions agreed on between manufacturer and user.In our in-house test laboratory we can test up to a maximum immersion depth of 1.2 metres.Conditions for acceptance: Should water have penetrated, it must not- be present in quantities which impair the good working order of the operating material or represent a safety hazard;- deposit on non-conducting parts where it could lead to creep currents;- come in contact with live parts or coils which are unsuitable for operating in wet conditions;- collect near the wire end or possibly penetrate the wire.

Devices backed by an international standard rating of IP68 are deemed fit enough to withstand dust, dirt and sand, and are resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes.

The Ingress Protection rating (IP Rating) system is a classification system that in a nutshell, provides you with the levels of protection youre receiving from solid objects and liquids. The standard aims to provide users with more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof.

The basic standards for IP rating are IS/IEC 60529. The standard aims to provide users with more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof. The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects, while the second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids; the higher the value, the greater the protection.

CDG provides ISO 17025-accredited ingress protection services in India.

What is the IP certification?

IP certifications stand for Ingress Protection, or simply put, how well protected a device is against the ingress or entering of solid or liquid particles. While calling particular gadgets water-resistant or waterproof may sound convenient, it may also end up being vague. An official rating standard gives more in-depth context to how much a device can withhold against elements like water or dust.

Once manufacturers and companies receive IP ratings for a product the distribution of product among consumers becomes more smooth and easy. Not only that but in return companies and manufacturers are also able to generate more sales and revenue. With IP rating you are able to offer your consumer a detailed idea about how resistant and enclosed your electrical product is to outside elements like dust and water.

Today various products, mainly smartphones , come across water drop related issues. Not only smartphones but there are various IOT products that need protection against these unintentional contacts. Many times dust and other particles also become the reason behind these risks. Some of the risks include water splash, dust, exposure to rain water and more.

What significance do the numbers hold?

The IPXY numbers mean different standards for both solid and liquid. Here are what the ratings mean for the solid particle protection rating (third character).

1 protected against particles greater than 50mm in size.

2 protected against particles greater than 12.5mm in size (finger-sized objects).

3 protected against particles greater than 2.5mm in size (thick wires).

4 protected against particles greater than 1mm (thin wires, screws).

5 protective against dust particles to a level. Particles may still enter but not in enough quantity to cause significant damage quickly.

6 completely protective against dust particles.

Meanwhile, for liquids, heres what the numbers mean

1 protected against vertically dripping water, with no angled surface or pressure involved, for up to 10 minutes.

2 protected against dripping water on a surface tilted till up to 15-degrees for up to 10 minutes.

3 protected against spraying water at up to 60 degrees, under pressure of 80-100kPa for up to 5 minutes.

4 protected against water splashes from any direction, under pressure of 80-100kPa for up to 5 minutes.

5 protected against water jets sprayed through a nozzle from any direction under pressure of 30kPa at a distance of 3 meters for up to 3 minutes.

6 protected against powerful water jets from any direction with pressure up to 100kPa at a distance of 3 meters for up to 3 minutes.

7 protected against complete immersion of up to 1 meter depth for up to 30 minutes.

8 protected against complete immersion beyond 1 meter depth and up to 3 meters.

Putting the two numbers together, users should get a good idea of how well protected any of their gadgets are against particles. For instance if a device has an IP rating of IP68, you know that the gadget is protected against dust particles completely and can be submerged between 1 and 3 meters underwater.

CDG is an ISO 17020-accredited inspection agency & ISO 17025-accredited testing laboratory for ISO 17712 testing & certification.

ISO 17712 standards

When it comes to mechanical freight container seals, ISO 17712 establishes standard procedures for the classification, acceptance, and withdrawal. Its a one-stop shop for details on mechanical seals approved for use on shipping containers in international trade. ISO 17712, as it is now, calls for third-party verification in three key areas:

Testing to determine a seals physical strength (as barriers to entry).

I for Indicative, S for Security, and H for High Security are the three classes of seal strength or barrier capacity defined by ISO 17712. According to C-TPAT, H class seals are mandatory. When verifying a seals classification, manufacturers are required to engage external, third-party testing facilities. For testing related to ISO 17712, a lab must be accredited in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 (General standards for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories).

Auditing of manufacturers security-related business processes.

An inadequate security procedure can undermine the benefits of a top-notch security seal. Annex A of ISO 17712 specifies more than two dozen mandatory procedures, including risk assessments and access controls for manufacturing and storage sites. Suppliers must additionally show proof of compliance with Annex A by using a certification body recognized for auditing ISO standards.

Seals be designed and constructed with tamper indicative features that generate tell-tale evidence of tampering.

Manufacturers of high-security seals are required to prove to an impartial third-party auditor and receive certification that their products are tamper-evident. If the seals submitted for review show the telltale evidence of tampering generated by attempts to defeat a correctly closed and affixed seal, the manufacturer will be given a certificate of compliance by the independent third-party organization. This certification must show that the organization is accredited to ISO 17020. Since seals are commonly broken in order to smuggle in illegal goods or steal a container, this is a huge step forward for C-TPAT containers and trailers that require the highest level of protection.

A high-security seal must be placed on all loaded containers destined for the United States, as stated in the C-TPAT security criterion. ISO 17712, the international standard for high-security seals, must be met or exceeded by all seals. It is possible for C-TPAT Partners to use the last of their ISO 17712:2010 high-security seals while they wait for ISO 17712:2013 high-security seals to become available for purchase. When seals can be altered before they are applied and closed, they are far more likely to be breached. Nobody who isnt authorized or properly trained should ever handle a seal. Establishing a seal integrity mechanism between parties helps reduce the likelihood of seals being broken. Prior to installing and closing any seals, they should be verified and inspected according to the VVTT procedure:

V: View seal and container locking mechanisms.

V: Verify seal number for accuracy.

T: Tug on the seal to make sure it is affixed properly.

T: Twist and turn the seal to make sure it does not unscrew.

To ensure compliance with the ISO 17712 standard, there is a need to have third-party verification that a suppliers product and processes are up to par. Partners should inquire from their vendors for copies of relevant compliance certificates, such as those pertaining to product testing and company security procedures.

A lab that has been accredited in accordance with ISO procedures, such as ISO 17025, is the only one to issue certifications attesting to the results of product testing. A third-party testing facility must vouch for the reliability of the test facility.

IP65 Testing And certification

IP65 Rating / IP65 Certification: The first digit 6 shows complete protection against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure and against the ingress of dust. Meaning of second digit 5 already described above.

IP Enclosure Ratings and Standards Explained

The IP rating is also known as Ingress Protection or International Protection ratings which are defined to the international standard of EN 60529, BS EN 60529:1992, IEC 60509:1989. These standards are used to define the levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies such as dirt and water.

The rating consists of the letters IP followed by 2 digits, the first digit stands for the level of protection that the enclosure provides against solid bodies, the second digit describes the degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against water.

IP65 = First Digit - Solids

IP65 = Second Digit - Liquids

Below is easy to follow the chart to help you decide which IP rating / IP Codes you may require for your electrical enclosure, Rainford manufacturers IP rated electrical enclosures including IP54, IP65 up to IP

What is ip65 enclosure?

IP65 Enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against water projected from a nozzle. IP66 Enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water. IP 67 Enclosures - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against immersion. Learn More

Is ip65 waterproof?

Example: With an IP65 rating, the LEDs can be used in an outside setting and are water-resistant but they are not waterproof and are not suitable to be submerged. An IP68 can be submerged in water. Learn more

What are ip65 standards?

At CDG, we utilize the IEC's standardized International Protection Code system for measuring enclosures' capabilities. The IP Code reflects the degree of protection as "IP" followed by two numbers; the first digit shows the extent to which enclosures are protected against particles and protection to others from enclosed hazards. The second digit indicates the extent of protection against water. We carry IP65 enclosures which offer complete protection against particles, and a good level of protection against water. Because all of our enclosures strictly observe the standards, you can expect first-rate and competitively-priced enclosures.

IP65 Enclosures' Characteristics:

Complete protection from dust, oil, and other non-corrosive material

General requirements for seals specified by ISO 17712

ISO 17712 requires that all security seals have the following general features:

Security seals must be unique, difficult to imitate and be marked with the corresponding information.

The design should be easy to inspect and to determine whether it is being used properly or its application is defective. No room must be left for doubt.

Security bolt seals must be at least 18 millimetres in diameter.

They are single use devices: by removing them, the seals must be destroyed and become unusable. They have to show clear proof in case of inviolability.

They must meet the thresholds of strength specified by the standard and pass all the tests to which they are submitted at the accredited bodies.

Three types of seals allowed by ISO 17712

ISO 17712 defines the various types of certified cargo container seals. There are three of these:

1. Indicating seals

They are plastic or metallic seals that are easy to open after they are fitted. As container seals, this type is used on empty containers which have to be moved over short distances, for example, in the same city. These seals ensure that the container is clean and suitable for loading. Of course, the indicating security seals must bear the regulatory marking including the numbering and the logo of the company.

2. Security seals

Security seal with metallic cable F-150Locking this type of seal already provides greater security, in order to prevent the unauthorized opening of cargo containers. The difference between this category of seals and the next is that security in this case is more restricted. In any case, if a seal has been broken, it must be evident during an inspection. They are also marked with numerical information and the logo.

3. High security seals

Clik-Lok high security sealThey are made of extremely strong materials such as metal, or they incorporate steel cable. The ultimate purpose of this type of seals is to prevent and hinder at all costs any attempt to open or tamper with them. In addition, advanced special tools are needed for its removal. The most commonly used type of marking for these seals is by laser, due to its excellent resistance to environmental aggression. The letter “H” (from High Security Seals) defines the classification of this type of seal.

Mechanical strength tests in ISO 17712

Security seals certified in accordance with the standard must comply with specific tests in relation to tensile, cutting and impact strength. These tests must be carried out in institutions accredited by the regulations. Let us see in detail what they consist of:

Tensile strength: defines the strength of the security mechanism, which must be greater than 1, 000 kg. It consists of pulling the ends until they eventual separate.

Cutting: both in security bolt seals and those with metal cables, the cutting strength must be greater than 340 kg.

Lateral impact: this test consists of striking the security bolt seal perpendicularly in an attempt to break it. Tests the flexibility of the seal shaft and its ability to bend.

Vertical impact: in this case, the impact may come from any angle until the seal is broken.

What is IP rating?

The term IP stands for international or ingress protection marking that reflects the degree of protection a product holds. It was drawn up by the International Electrochemical Commission (ICE) to help consumers select the best and quality assured product. IP rating is followed by two nombre where the first digital helps consumers to determine the extent to which the product is protected against different particles and hazards. Whereas the second number displays the protection of the product against liquid products.

Importance of IP rating

By getting the IP rating for your product you are able to highlight the level of protection your product holds against solid and liquid elements. This way consumers are able to determine whether the product they are buying meets their expectations or not. Apart from that, users buying the product are well aware of the protective measure so that they are able to work more safely without damaging the product.

If a product is certified with IP68 rating then it means one can easily drop his/her smartphone in the freshwater. Whereas if the phone is droppers in the ocean or chlorinated water then it can cause problems. Whereas if the particular product is having IP67 rating then it indicated that the product is dust tight and can survive upto one metre of water for not more than 30 minutes.

Today consumers are educated enough to differentiate between various types of IP rating and so that they get the best product. If your product has an IP rating of 67 or 68 then it will not only make your product the first choice of consumers but they are likely to make the final purchase of your product.

Many products undergo a variety of tests before they reach the market. These tests include product safety testing, electromagnetic compatibility, vibration testing and many others. Ingress Protection testing, or IP testing, tests a product’s ability to protect against “ingress, ” that is, the infiltration of water, dust and foreign objects.

Why hire CDG For IP rating?

When a company or a manufacturer plans to get an IP rating for their product then they need to get it tested by a certified or independent company. The company put the product into test testing then assigned the numerical rating that signifies how well the product is protected from the solid and liquid. If you are looking to get the IP rating for the product then you need to look for professionals that can help you with that.

CDG is one of the leading IP rating service providers helping manufacturers and businesses across different countries to get IP rating for their product.
