Star Aniseed

Star anise is the dried, star shaped fruit of Illicium verum. It is an evergreen tree attaining a height of 8-15 meters and a diameter of 25 cm. The leaves are entire, 10-15 cm long, 2.5 5 cm broad, elliptic, flowers are solitary, white to red in colour. Fruits are star shaped, reddish brown consisting of 6-8 carpels arranged in a whorl. Each carpel is 10 mm long, boat shaped, hard and wrinkled containing a seed. Seeds are brown, compressed, ovoid, smooth, shiny and brittle.

Origin and Distribution
Star Anise is indigenous to South Eastern China. Commercial production is limited to China and Vietnam. In India, it is produced to a small extent in Arunachal Pradesh.

The crop requires specific agro climatic conditions available only in the traditional growing areas, which has prevented repeated attempts of other countries to grow star anise. However it prefers woodlands, sunny edges, and dappled shade. The plant grows well in humus rich, mildly acidic to neutral soils, which are light to medium and having good drainage. It tolerates temperatures down to 10 degree C.

Uses

Tamarind

The ripe fruit of tamarind tree is used as a condiment. It is a moderate size to large, evergreen tree, up to 24 mtr in high and 7 mtr in girth. Bark is brown or dark gray, longitudinally and horizontally fissured. Leaves are paripinnate up to 15 cm long, leaflets are 10-20 pairs, oblong, 8-30 mm. Flowers are small, yellowish with pink stripes, pods are 7.5-20 cm long, 2.5 cm broad, 1 cm thick, more or less constricted between seeds, slightly curved, brownish coloured. Seeds are 3-12 oblong compressed, 1.5 cm, dark brown shining. Endocarp is light brownish, sweetish or acidic, edible pulp, traversed by branched ligneous strands. The outer cover of the pod is fragile and easily separable.

Make a bandage of the following things and apply on the wound : mix 4 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp pur ghee, 12 tsp sendha namak ( non refined salt) with water.
Take 500 ml of water and boil it with 1 tsp sendha namak and 1 tsp turmeric powder. Give fomentation to the bruised part with a cloth soaked in this water. This will help get rid to pain and swelling in that region.
Dusting turmeric powder on wounds also helps in relieving the pain and swelling.

SKIN PROBLEMS :
Apply the paste of turmeric and sesame oil on body to prevent eruptions.
To avoid any kind of skin problems apply turmeric paste before a bath.
To cure itching take roasted turmeric with jaggery.
To eliminate freckles and spots rub ground turmeric with milk of banyan or papal and soak it overnight and then apply it for 1 hours before bath. This will help in removing freckles and also give glow to the face.
Make a pudding of 2 tsp flour with 1 tsp ghee and 1 tsp turmeric, 2 tsp sugar and 1 cup water and take this in the morning it will halp in curing uticaria.

DIGESTIVE AID :
To get instant relief form acidity take turmeric powder and salt in egual guantity with warm water.
Taking curd or butter milk turmeric after lunch cures digestive problems.
Grind 4gms turmeric, 4 gms dried ginger, 2 gms black pepper and 2 gms cardamom and take this mixture after meals this will aid digestion and will eliminate flatulence.
