Solar Powered Pump System Has Three Parts

• Motor & Pump
• Controller
• Solar Panels

The solar panels generate the power and make motor rotation though the controller. The size of the PV-system is directly dependent on the size of the motor & pump, the amount of water that is required (m3/d) and the solar irradiance available.

The controller is the heart of the system, it has got the provision of dual input power i.e Solar & electricity (1 / 3 phase). The controller prefers to run solar power mostly, EB power considered during the absence of sun. If the customer prefer only day time running the EB power may put off. Based on the sun ration level the controller sense the module voltage and makes the motor to rotate, accordingly the same will start from 7.30 am onwards and run till 5.30 am (the timing varies base on the geographic of the site) with our any manual intervention. The controller is two fold. Firstly, it matches the output power that the pump receives with the input power available from the solar panels. Secondly, a controller usually provides a low voltage protection, whereby the system is switched off, if the voltage is too low or too high for the operating voltage range of the pump. This increases the lifetime of the pump thus reducing the need for maintenance.

Voltage of the solar pump motors can be AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current). Direct current motors are used for small to medium applications up to about 2-3 HP rating, and are suitable for applications such as garden fountains, landscaping, drinking water for livestock, or small irrigation projects. However, the range of AC pumps are more, reliable & the backup support available across the county. The selection of the pump is based on the site condition like depth of the bore/well & water requirement.

In cases where the preventive action presented above is insufficient, it is necessary to equip the installation with filtering systems.

Operating Principle

These systems, comprising power electronics and installed in series or parallel with the non-linear load, compensate the harmonic current or voltage drawn by the load. Parallel-connected active harmonic conditioner (AHC) compensating the harmonic current (Ihar = -Iact). The AHC injects in opposite phase the harmonics drawn by the non-linear load, such that the line current Is remains sinusoidal.

• Commercial installations with a set of non-linear loads representing lessthan 500 KVA (variable-speed drives, UPSs, office equipment, etc.)
• Installations where current distortion must be reduced to avoid overloads.

ELITE APFC Panel has a Micro-controller based Programmable Controller, which switches the Capacitor banks of suitable capacity Automatically, in multiple stages by directly reading the reactive load (RKVA) which works in the Principle of VAR Sensing, tends to maintain the PF to 0.99 Lag. The capacitor banks may be selected in number of stages as 4/6/8 according to the load pattern. The TNEB is installing the Digital Electronic Energy Meters for Power and Welding Service consumers having 25HP and above, which has the provision of showing the PF and insisting to maintain the average Power Factor above 0.85 Lag.

WHAT IS POWER FACTOR (PF)?Power Factor is the ratio between the energy drawings (KVA) and the effective energy utilized (KW) i.e., PF=KW/KVA

WHY POWER FACTOR MUST BE MAINTAINED?By maintaining a better PF we can reduce the energy drawn (KVA), thus reducing the current passing through the electrical circuits to the maximum extent possible (even up to 50%) thereby reducing the down time, reduction in heat losses in turn increases the life of the equipment.

Otherwise, for every reduction of 0.01 from 0.85 up to 0.75 PENALTY is 1% and below 0.75 it is 1.5% from 0.85 of the Current Consumption Charges (KWh) on your Electric Bill.

INCENTIVE is also given by the Electricity Board when the PF is maintained above 0.90 @ 0.5 % for every increment of 0.01 on your Electric Bill.

HOW TO MAINTAIN THE POWER FACTOR?According to the load pattern, proper Capacity of Capacitors to be connected. The value of the capacitors to be connected will vary with respect to the load and its existing PF. There are two ways to maintain PF

1. Fixing the capacitors permanently at the load end or at the mains, generally which is recommended for the fixed loads like Pumps, fans etc., and it is not possible for the loads which have variations in the load and PF.

2. The Power Factor can be maintained by installing ELITE AUTOMATIC POWER FACTOR CONTROL PANEL.

ELITE PSC always gives output 3 phase supply in the right sequence and maintains 120 between phases, even if the input sequence is interchanged. Normally, for any 3 Phase Machines (or) Equipments like AC, UPS, Lifts and Motors, 3 Phase incoming supply has to be given in the right sequence (R, Y, B).

The Phase angle of 120 between the phases R, Y, B is to be maintained to run 3 phases Motors. If the sequence is changed instead of R, Y, B to Y, R, B the motor tends to rotate in the reverse direction. In case of 3 phase UPS, due to wrong sequence, the input supply will be cut and it starts working in the battery mode resulting in draining of battery.

If the sequence is changed for loads like 3 phase AC, UPS and Lifts, they will stop functioning due to the inbuilt sequence protection and only when the input sequence is corrected manually, they start functioning. ELITE Automatic Phase Sequence Corrector always gives an output 3 phase supply in the right sequence and maintains 120 between phases, even if the input sequence is interchanged. Thus all the 3 phase equipments continue to run irrespective of the change in input phase sequence.

Operating functions

• Whenever three phase input supply is given to ELITE PSC, it checks whether all the 3 phase are alive initially
• If all the three phases are detected by the Single Phase Preventer (SPP), then it checks and selects the RIGHT SEQUENCE to give always the desired output.
