Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is a controlled process in which a material that has been welded is reheated to a temperature below its lower critical transformation temperature, and then it is held at that temperature for a specified amount of time. Preheating minimizes the temperature difference between the welding arc and the base material. This benefits the weldment in several ways. First is to lessen shrinkage stresses that can lead to cracking and distortion. Prior to connection to the transformer, the ends of the wires must be stripped of this coating – a standard process that takes some time. However, sanding down the insulation is difficult if the wire has several layers, and a process using open flames carries certain health and safety risks.
