About Jamnagar
The Jewel of Kathiawar, Jamnagar located in the western coast of India is the 5th largest city in Gujarat. This bustling-little city came into being as the capital of the royal state of ‘Nawanagar’ around 444 years ago. The sights of the unspoiled beaches, magnificent hills, veritable forests, awe-inspiring birdlife, ‘Rajputana’ palaces, and multihued bazaars are common in the region. The city got its urban makeover by Sir Edward Lutyens (the architect of New Delhi) until recently when the place is brimming with axial roads, prim gardens, modern residences, brightly-lit shops, and most importantly, the large industries. Boasting of the best brass utensils and huge oil refineries, no wonder, Jamnagar at present is popularly referred as the ‘Brass City of India’.
Theology and Culture
Though the Jamnagar city has seamlessly blended in the modernity, the rich tradition is vigorously running in its veins. The colorfully-clad inhabitants believe to live life flamboyantly, without any stop. The ‘Gujarati’, ‘Kathiawadi’ and ‘Kutchi’ language are also massively used for the ordinary conversations. The city, speckled with the plenty of Hindu and Jain temples, is an ardent follower of Hinduism and Jainism. Muslims is another big community in this region. All festivals are celebrated with zeal and jollity but ‘Makar Sankranti’, the kite festival is the popular one. Jamnagar’s celebrations are incomplete without its traditional dances like ‘garba’ and ‘rasa’, and the traditional temple music and the folk songs. The exalted ‘Ranji’ and ‘Duleep’ trophies, a tribute to the former rulers of this region, exhibit the significance of sports as the quintessence of the city’s culture. Also, Jamangar is famous for its ‘bandhej-work’ garments, ‘decorative brass items’, as well as the local cuisines like ‘bhel-puri’, ‘pani-puri’, ‘dry fruit kachori’ and many others.
