Nowadays this species has been introduced in Hawaii and Florida. Since they were imported from American Samoa they are given the name Samoan crab in Hawaii. Their big size and delicious meat makes their demand high and led to over crabbing, To stop the same the government has had to put a ban on the crabbing of species less than 6 inches of size.
The juveniles are residents of Mangroves while sub adults can be found in the high tide region. On the other hand, the adults are seen in the low tide zone. The mud crabs are cannibalistic in nature. When they are moulting they have a tendency to devour other crabs around them. Females of this species give birth to a million offspring and thus their population never goes down.

Mostly you will find it in very large numbers and is found endemically in the Hawaiian Islands. In five of the eight islands of Hawaii, the shrimp is found. They are known to be both herbivorous and detritivorous which is a very surprising fact.

Red shrimps diet includes algal and bacterial mats which are found on rocks surface. The reproduction process of the same happens in the subterranean area of their habitat. Red shrimp is one of the longest living creatures in their category and some can even survive for 20 years at a stretch.

It is quite difficult to demarcate a male red shrimp from a female one. However, the female carries clusters of red/maroon eggs under their pleopods and that can be a distinguishing factor. At times they may mot their shells which are seen as shells down the tank or wherever they are stored. It is said that red shrimps mate after moulting though there is no evidence to prove that. In conditions that they are stressed the red tiny shrimp would want to hide.

The adult white leg shrimps are found in the sea at a depth of around 72 metres and the young ones can be seen thronging the estuaries. Its rostrum is moderately long and has 7-10 feet on the dorsal side while it has two to four teeth on the ventral side. The white leg shrimp is mostly found in temperatures above the level of 20 degrees.

In the 20th century, this species was very crucial for the fisherman of this region. However, by the end of the decade fisheries became overcome by aquaculture. In fact, in El Nino years the temperature rose and the population of the Vannamei Shrimp declined and vice versa. 9 years back Greenpeace foundation added the same to the seafood red list. This includes species which are easily sold in fisheries and can be easily sourced from unsustainable fisheries. In the year 2016, its global production was 55% of crustacean’s production worldwide.

Off late, this variety has been introduced in the Mediterranean region as well. The length of the Goinar at maturity is around 8.6 metre. However, it is believed that its average length would remain around 6-6.5 cm.

The weight range if the Goinar remains between 3.7 to 13.5 grams. This species is usually found in the muddy bottoms of seas ranging at a depth of around 85 metres. You can also look for them at the mouth of estuaries.

During the day time, the Goinar is found burrowing inside the mud hence the need to stay deep. At this time you only see its antennular flagella are sticking out. These antennas then help the Goinar to respirate freely. For mating, it uses its olfactory and tactile cues and indirectly transfers its sperm to the female species. Some fisheries tend to nurture the Goinar though their number is definitely less than for other species.

The maximum length that the Red Shrimp achieves is around 15 centimetres though there is no clue about its average height or any other important detail.

The common length of the male species of red shrimp is 11 centimetre while that of his female counterpart is 14 centimetre. Members of this species of prawns are considered to be gonochoric by nature. In order to mate they indulge in a precopulatory courtship ritual. After the ritual is over an indirect transfer of sperm happens from the male to the female.

Overall there is no such indication that the red shrimp is dangerous or is moving on the path to extinction. The fact that it is mostly found in the Indian Ocean strengthens the belief that it might soon become rare. However, because they are found in fewer numbers the price of one piece tends to be very high. The taste of the red shrimp is good and hence many people long to purchase them for consumption.

Its natural region is around the Indo Pacific area. Thus you can find it from South Africa, the Indian Ocean to the Malay Archipelago, and from southern Japan to south-eastern Australia, and as far east as Fiji and Samoa.

In India, the major states where its nurturing is done are south-east coast-Orissa, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Tamil Nadu and Union territory of Puducherry and in the Southwest coast-Kerala, Goa and Karnataka.

The total length of female species is around 36-130 mm and that for males is around 41-120 mm. The average sex ratio, in this case, is around 1:1.5 (M: F). In five months’ time, the maturity size of around 69 mm is achieved. At the Chennai fisheries harbour, the Poovalan shrimp holds the most important position in terms of average consumption.

In the areas between Ongole in south Andhra Pradesh and Nagapattinam to the south of Chennai, the Poovalan shrimp is believed to be fished from a depth of anywhere between 5-60 metres. The normal style to capture the same is using a trawl as that yields the best results possible. In Vishakhapatnam, it is found that both the fisheries of the east and west coast contribute their share and increase the potential growth of the variety.
