There are two clamps present in the machine that are lower clamp and upper clamp. The test specimen is basically placed between both the clamps for strong hold. Adequate amount of pressure is applied on the specimen to avoid any slippage. The upper clamp has spiral grooves and the lower clamp has concentric grooves. The strength of the material is measured using the testing instrument in two ways that are manual exertion of pressure and automatic exertion of pressure through rubber structure. The area of application of pressure is circular in shape.
When there is application of force, the specimen collapses along with diaphragm. In this way the bursting strength of the material is duly calculated according to the maximum pressure required to be applied on the material for failure. The pressure applied is measured using a Pressure gauge.

The strength calculated through this procedure is used to calculate the maximum weight that the material can bear before failure. The melt flow index of a plastic resin is termed as the weight of the resin flowing through a capillary tube every ten minutes under an unambiguous load or shear stress. The melt flow index tester is used for determination of the melt flow rate of various materials such as plastic granules. It is a widely used product in plastics and polymer industry. The instrument is designed and manufactured as per standards set by ISO and ASTM and is mainly focused on meeting the principal conditions necessary for the test procedure.
The instrument has a PID temperature controller, and its working is based on a microprocessor. The temperature can vary from ambient to 4000C. Box Compression Tester is used to measure the compression potency, strength or stacking power of beehive crates, cartons, corrugated boxes, paper cases, paper tanks, etc. The Box compression tester is a well-engineered apparatus, designed especially to calculate the load range a box or a carton can bear till complete failure. In this procedure, weight of specific range is chosen to completely crush the specimen in a set time period to measure the maximum stacking load.
It is a solid instrument which requires sufficient space in a laboratory to place with user-friendly controls. Cardboard boxes must have sufficient compression strength so that they do not get crushed when stack one above the other at the time of transportation or storage. The compression strength of a carton is gauged simply by placing a test specimen say, corrugated box or carton between two parallel plates. Now set the compression strength and the standard time period from the digital panel to compress the specimen.

The crushing strength of a box is measured as KN per unit length. Edge crush test value is greatly dependent on the bonding of the paste. Higher value of edge crushing force depicts that the box has a high stiffness level. This allows comparing the quality and strength of corrugated boxes. With the ECT, it is possible to find the compressive strength for the box with the use of McKees formula which is given by the following equation.
