Description:
Monoethanolamine (MEA) is a clear, colorless to pale-yellow viscous liquid with an ammonia-like odor. It is a primary amine and alcohol compound, combining the properties of both to make it an extremely versatile intermediate and solvent. MEA exhibits strong alkalinity and is highly hygroscopic (readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air).
Applications:
Gas Treating (Acid Gas Removal): Used for the absorption and removal of CO and HS from natural gas and refinery gas streams.
Surfactants & Detergents: Used in the production of emulsifiers, soaps, and cleaning agents.
Pharmaceuticals & Cosmetics: Used as a pH adjuster and emulsifier in creams, lotions, and shampoos.
Textile & Leather Processing: Acts as a neutralizing agent and softening chemical.
Corrosion Inhibitors: Used in coolant formulations and metal treatment processes.
Chemical Intermediate: Raw material for manufacturing morpholine, ethylenimine, and other ethanolamine derivatives.
Storage & Handling:
Store MEA in tightly closed, corrosion-resistant containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from strong oxidizers and acids. As MEA is hygroscopic, containers must be sealed properly to prevent absorption of moisture and CO. Heating may be required during winter to prevent solidification. Use stainless steel or carbon steel storage tanks with nitrogen blanketing if possible.
