These have been developed by using the basic scientific principles of combustion and heat transfer involving conduction, convection and radiation thus leading to fuel efficiency under both field and laboratory conditions. Thus fuel efficient wood burning stoves have established significant savings of fuel wood compared to traditional stoves and also provide added benefits of removing smoke from the cooking place and providing a clean and healthy environment around the stoves. Since more than 70 percent of rural house holds depend on fuel wood stoves and get their fuel by gathering and carrying as head loads, saving of fuel wood means reducing the human drudgery especially for women and children since they contribute around 70 percent of time for the fuel wood gathering and traveling over a long distance. This also avoids and reduces the pressure on deforestation & minimizes the emission of green house gases because of clean, complete and efficient combustion through reduced quantities of fuel consumption. Large number of demonstrations has been conducted and different types of fuel efficient stoves have been developed in Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Pondichery, Maharashtra etc.
