Undecylenic Acid also called as 10-Undecenoic acid is an unsaturated fatty acid having its double bond in the 10-position.Undecylenic acid is prepared by pyrolysis of ricinoleic acid, which is derived from castor oil. Specifically, the methyl ester of ricinoleic acid is cracked to yield both undecylenic acid and heptanal.Undecylenic acid is known for its anti-fungal properties which means that it prevents the growth of fungus.It is also the starting material for other important fragrance chemicals and flavouring agents.


Uses of Undecylenic Acid

  • Undecylenic Acid is used in the manufacture of Nylon-11 which is an important engineering polymer. Nylon-11 is used for making pipes because of its high strength, flexibility and stability in extreme conditions, electrical wire sheathing, textiles, etc.
  • Undecylenic Acid derivatives are used in the flavors and fragrances industry.
  • Undecylenic acid is an active ingredient in medications for skin infections, and to relieve itching, burning, and irritation associated with skin problems.
