Afatinib is used to treat certain types of non-small cell lung cancer that has spread to nearby tissues or to other parts of the body. Afatinib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. Afatinib is used to treat metastatic (cancer that has already spread) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has certain types of abnormal epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) genes in patients who have not received any treatments for cancer that has already spread to other parts of the body.
